Is Dominican Republic Safe?
Basically yes.
In general, Dominicans want tourists here and the punishments are harsh for anyone that hurts or endangers a tourist.
Small towns here are super safe, if you leave your wallet at a restaurant, they’ll chase after you to gave it back. If you have no money, they’ll give you food and a bed. Wear your Rolex and relax.
Punta Cana is pretty safe. In the resorts, there will never be any violent crimes, but you might deal with a little petty theft. if you go into Los Corales, Cortecito and some of the bar areas its safe, but there will be pushy salesman and some scams some drugs being sold, etc etc, normal late night bar area city vibes.
Higuey can be sketch. It really depends on where you go. In the center of the city where the basilica is, its chaotic, and you might get hit be a car but you won’t get robbed, shot, violently assaulted or otherwise. You might feel overwhelmed by the chaos of it, but you’ll be safe. if you go into the depths of the city, there’s some areas you’ll either be escorted out of it or be told to leave. It’s better to have a guide or be on a tour in Higuey. Don’t stay the night unless you know someone from Higuey, are staying with them and trust them.
Santo Domingo is Bipolar. there’s lots of really beautiful areas of Santo Domingo, and lots to stay away from. If you’re a short term visitor, stick to the Colonial Zone, and the Botanical Garden. Can also stop on the main roads for food, lots of reallllly great street food.
Everywhere else is pretty much fine. Careful of block parties, sometimes people are crazy when they’re drunk. Dont buy drugs outside of Punta Cana. Police, Military, Politur and pretty much all other forms of government will help you as a tourist.
