Best Ways To Travel The DR
In my opinion there’s basically 4 broad options to travel the DR; all-inclusive resorts, road trip, chasing a passion and voluntourism. They all have their time and place.
All inclusive.
This is basically if you just want to chill and be waited on. The more you spend the more they wait on you. In my opinion, you’re not really traveling to the Dominican Republic, you’re going to “Disney”. Which is great if you’re looking for that experience.
Road Trip.
This is the best way to explore and travel the country, to get a taste for all its different flavors and to see everything it has to offer. It can be challenging to plan these and to get as deep into the culture as many would like because of the language and culture barrier. Our self drive tours are designed to bridge that gap. to get you deeper into the culture, to see more hidden natural places and to truly experience the heart of the country.
Chasing a Passion.
This is my personal favorite way to travel anywhere. Whether you’re into painting, surfing, woodworking, fishing, anything! traveling to meet and find like minded people is so much fun! you learn about how someone does your same thing a different way, or the same way with different equipment, materials, style etc. It’s such an underrated way to travel, it gives you an instant connection into the culture through the lens of something you already love! This can and should be combined with road-trip style travel.
Voluntourism
This one is a bit weird for me. Generally, I think people find a lot of purpose and passion in helping impoverished people. It gives you a look into a very specific niche of the Dominican Republic, often times a view into the immigrating Haitian Bateys located in the DR. This style of travel undoubtable helps people here locally, but I think it’s weird to turn impoverished people into a product. “Help these poor people to feel good about yourself” or “I’m gonna show my kids how hard life is for other people so they appreciate how good their life at home is”.
